The Ancient Moat
The Moat is an Ancient Monument and comes under the Gloucestershire Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) and the National Monuments Record (NMR).

It is situated behind The Moat, Park Drive and Parklands. Access is through Scholars Walk. Where a small footpath takes you down to the Moat, there is a grassed area, a seat complete with refuse bin and dog bin.

The Moat was on the original site of Woolstrop House which was destroyed by fire in the 1990's. Medieval Woolstrop was never more than a small settlement: the 1327 lay subsidy roll records 12 individuals for Quedgeley plus two only in Woolstrop. Although the subsidy lists only those liable for tax and is therefore not a reliable basis for population estimates.

The Moat is almost certainly the site of Woolstrop Manor, of Medieval (probably 13th Century) origin, recorded in 1672 as a substantial house with 11 hearths (Morgan 1972, 219). In the later 18th century the manor house was relocated to a new site in the north west and the Moat apparently abandoned.

The water in the Moat was originally fed from the local stream with two access points. On the map above water came into the Moat at the bottom right corner, and came out on the top right hand corner. This free flowing water meant a current was available through the Moat, and a reasonable water height was maintained. With the water flowing silt and debris was kept to a minimum.

What has QACA done?

On the map above - below the Moat you see the drive and building of Woolstrop House, which was burnt down in the 1990's. QACA were concerned that this area would be developed on. With the help of Stroud District Council, a preservation order was put on all the trees around the area. When plans went through for the development on the site, archaeological surveys were carried out. On the day the builders moved on to the site QACA held a demonstration. The Moat had now been designated as an Ancient Monument. This in effect stopped the Moat from being destroyed and built on. However, damage had already been done, the water supply had been destroyed leaving the Moat with no fresh running water. The building company also promised to pay for maintenance to be carried out on the Moat. This has not progressed and the Moat continues to decay.

QACA are continually pushing to try and protect this Ancient Monument, alas because of its status, it comes under the control of English Heritage and Gloucester City Council. If we gain Charitable status we will try to take control of this site, and others throughout Quedgeley, and hopefully restore them to their original glory. Not only will this be a bonus to the people of Quedgeley, it will also be protecting the much needed public open spaces within the Quedgeley area.
